Information

The Quayside is the area along the banks of the River Tyne between the cities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead in North East England. The Gateshead side of the river is also referred to as Gateshead Quays. In recent years, the area has been heavily invested in to provide a modern environment for Modern Arts, Music, Housing, Culture as well as bars and night clubs to coexist.

One of the Quayside's main features is the Gateshead Millennium Bridge which spans the river between the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Newcastle Law Courts. The Sage Gateshead music and conference centre is also a prominent landmark.

The 'Toon'

Newcastle City Centre is a friendly and vibrant modern metropolis that is cosmopolitan and chic. The mixture of architecture styles and contrasting wide lane thoroughfares and narrow mysterious lanes make this one of Britain's most exciting and surprising cities.

It is a place  of glorious shopping , cultural interest and exhilarating beauty.

Situated on the banks of the big River Tyne it is linked to what some say is its little sister Gateshead by a series of impressive and architecturally stunning  road and rail bridges.

When the Romans crossed the Tyne they called the settlement after the single bridge, Pons Aelius. Today Newcastle is still famous for the bridges that join the city to neighbouring Gateshead.

Perhaps then as now you get a lump in your throat when the bridges come into view as you approach the Tyne. Mind you perhaps that's also where the similarity ends. I doubt the soldiers ever sent dispatches back to Rome urging other legionaires to get posted to Pons Aelius because of its legendary nightlife!

There's an impressive energy about Newcastle's handsome city centre, whether it's expended in the ongoing redevelopment of Northumberland Street and its surrounding shopping areas or down on the revitalized Quayside, scene of much of the city's nightlife. Indeed, there's a sharper edge to Newcastle's carousing these days, with new cafés, bars and clubs rivalling the traditional knees-up antics of the notorious Bigg Market. Culturally, too, Newcastle is way ahead of its local rivals ?Durham included ?boasting the best art gallery in the Northeast, and a slew of good theatres and music venues. The latest project, due to be completed by 2001, will see the old Baltic flour mills on the Gateshead side of the river become a new centre for the contemporary visual arts.

With a population of around 280,000 people, the city was once capital of the ancient Kingdom of Northumbria. Lying between the Scottish Border and North Yorkshire, Northumbria is famous for its stunning scenery and rich history and is now Britain's fastest growing tourist region.

The Quayside

The quayside may be the first view of Newcastle if they arrive by rail from the south as the line takes a long slow curve around Gateshead and gives a panoramic view from the railway bridge over the Tyne.

The Quayside area is the cultural heart of the historic city and the blend of 17th century Merchants houses and Georgian and Victorian architecture is beautiful and awe inspiring. But the area is also a lively and chic resort for the young and fashionable once the sun goes down.

Newcastle is justifiably famous for its endless variety of shopping and nightlife. This is a cosmopolitan city of great vibrancy and friendliness mixed with a great variety of entertainment and culture.

There is an abundance of theatres, cinemas, concerts and operas and the nightlife is electrifying. the pubs are so popular you may have to queue to get in at weekends and the restaurants on offer have some of the finest cuisine in the world. One has to include the other 'scenery' too, for Newcastle has the prettiest and most daringly dressed female population in the country.
